Eve

Creation of Eve

Eve, whose name means “life-giving” was the first woman and wife of Adam. (Gen. 3:20; 4:1) As the mother of all living. Her creation is described in Gen. 2:21 , 22. It is supposed that she was created on the day, after the reviewing and naming of the animals by Adam. When Adam found no suitable companionship from all the creatures that passed before him, God caused a deep sleep to fall over him and removed one of his ribs which he used to create a woman. When Adam awoke God brought her to him, stating that “[it is] not good that the man should be alone,” and provided her to him as a suitable companion. Through this action, God gave divine standards for marriage and monogamy. “This companion was taken from his side to signify that she was to be dear unto him as his own flesh. Not from his head, lest he should tyrannize over her; but from his side, to denote that species of equality which is to subsist in the marriage state” (Matthew Henry).

Eve and the Tree

Through the craftiness of the serpent, Eve was tricked into violating the only restriction that had been placed over her and Adam when she ate fruit from the forbidden tree and shared it with her husband (II Co. 11:3; I TI. 2:13). In the New Testament, Paul seems to indicate that the woman was less aware than her husband about the nature of their sin. (I Ti. 2:14) Because of her disobedience to the divine command, Eve was doomed to suffer a multiplication and aggravation of sorrow, especially in the birth of her offspring. She was also destined to struggle with husband over conflicting desires, but the husband was instructed to rule over her. (Gen. 3:16).
